LIFE IN JUVIE: Prison vs. Detention - Scenes of Kids Inside
We are often asked what the difference is between kids being locked up in detention vs. being sentenced to juvenile prison. In this video, we look back at footage our cameras captured inside both back in the early 2000's. In the first clips, we see teenagers who have been brought into detention by police after committing juvenile offenses such as car theft, runaway and possession of marijuana. Kids in detention are here awaiting their juvenile court hearings where a judge can decide whether or not to release them to a parent or guardian, whether to keep them detained following their initial court hearing, whether to sentence them to a juvenile prison or--the worst punishment of all--waiving them to the adult system.
In this video, we also hear from a state Supreme Court Chief Justice as she discusses what life was like on the job when she was a juvenile judge.
We then transition to video footage we captured inside a maximum-security juvenile prison, and what life looked like on the inside at the time for the teens who were sentenced there by juvenile judges around the state. This raw footage shows the reality of life inside the segregation unit as well as prison counselors trying to calmly talk to a teen who was having anger issues after he was not allowed to attend school that day.

I think the issue in this particular situation and this is that nobody knew that the dad was a mean drunk and you can only push someone so far before they snap I know because I was dealing with a very stressful situation. The difference with me as I was an adult and wear my voice and my manner was calm. I was stressed to a point that had I been pushed much further. I might’ve taken an action very similar to these young people. The only difference is that I was still maturing, even though I was in my 30s, mainly because my development was stopped when I was 11 And so as a young man, I ended up having to grow up the hard way because my mother committed suicide, so I can understand why people can only be pushed so far and if that 15-year-old had been pushed that hard he got to a point where he just can handle it anymore, and he decided to take matters into his own hands and I can understand why he might’ve done that but he’s also paying the consequences for his actions and I don’t think more time is gonna make us feel safe. I honestly think that The state is wrong to have put him in there for 30 years. I honestly think that 8 1/2 years would’ve been sufficient for him with the consequences of his actions and this documentary is from 2012. I hope that Mr. Cole actually won the appeal so that he could be resentenced and be out by the time he’s 21 nine years in prison means that you just lost your entire childhood. You don’t have to lose your entire life. He was 12 when this happened and yeah, he committed murder butthere’s extenuating circumstances for both of these kids. I think they were neglected as children even if there was no other type of abuse. The parents did not know what their kids were doing and they were unsupervised and a lot of situation so yes, there was some neglect going on and so the parents are just as responsible for what all three of these children did as the children are further actions and they were old enough to know better, but they made stupid decisions, which is what young children do and I would consider a 12-year-old not capable of making the adult level decisions to do things even if they made this mistake they’re still extenuating circumstances, and I think in the end the prosecutor did miss service and didn’t get justice plot applied properly. It’s a polling to know that young people can get their hands on weapons, but I just saw something in the month of June 2024 where a 16-year-old shot 11 shots and a nine-year-old is dead because of it so if you want to judge what people are doing, what they capable of perhaps you should look at the entertainment industry and look what they feed us all the time because guns are a thing that people use all the time if you look at the entertainment industry and it desensitizes us to the protect life and serve life and that’s what the parents of these three young men did not do they did not teach them to respect life and how to put into words the things that were bothering them and these three young men went and did something they shouldn’t have done And we as society are responsible for that because it takes a community to raise a child and us who are responsible for that This as a father of a 12 year old boy, and if my son were to shoot somebody and kill them and I was to be asked about it, I would say that yeah there needs to be consequences, but my son was traumatized as a very young child and the person who did it got away with it my son never got the help he needed nor did he get the justice that was deserved nor did my family get the justice that was deserved so if my son did something like this, I would go to the prosecutor or I would say very simply you know my son was traumatized as a kid by a neighbor and then the state came along and broke our family apart that provided more trauma to all three of us and so these are the consequences of the actions that were done to us and so I’m speaking as a father of a 12 year-old

I dont think kids should be charged as adults at all... Punished yeah... Some might be so disturbed ,they need to be kept in some kind of institution for life...yeah But everyone knows kids, do not process things like an adult... Noone says a 14 year old teen parent should now be able to vote, drink and drive, because they did an adult act.....it would be ridiculous.... Also, my step dads kids loved him, but reality living with him was a nightmare...how he was with them to how he was with us, was worlds apart.... Glad these lads got a chance at a new life....

@cynthiadavid5282 - very true. Some kids never go back; some kids go back more than a few times and then mature and never return. And sadly, some kids make life altering decisions that send them to prison for most of their adult life. It can be a vicious cycle, but we do see kids make it. Thanks as always for watching!

@@CalamariProductions the juvenile system is that old? I would've guessed it was set up in the 60's-70's. I know the adult system is old. They were just starting to build new institutions when I stopped getting in trouble in the 00's in ohio. I have no clue how many of the old institutions are still in use but I know orient and part of pickaway were supposed to be condemned back then but still had inmates housed in them. Broken windows, flooding dorms in the basement and all. As far as I know, there was only a few juvenile facilities back then and they were all pretty modern. There was a jdc in Marion and Marysville. Mohican and Circleville had DYS. Department of youth services was the juvenile equivalent to prison, juvenile detention centers were "jail". Like I've said on other videos, I don't know the answer but this really isn't it. These kids need to be away from their families and neighborhoods that are nothing but trouble. I remember kids bragging about their dad's or uncles going to "luke" . Lucasville is ohios super max or whatever it's called. One of those kids came in with a pretty short term but was actively trying to get sent there, constantly saying stuff like " they'll have to send me to luke!" He was successful. They rode him out but he had tacked on several years in the meantime. He came in with about a year staying in a dorm, went to Lucasville that's locked down 23 hours in a cell with close to a decade to do. Literally threw away the best years of his life for what? Street cred? To make his dad and uncles proud? It makes zero sense. I hope you don't feel like I'm trying to put you down or something. I really appreciate what you're doing.

My advice is, don't ever say anything bad about the other parent to your child. Children identify as being half Mom and half Dad, so when you say bad things about the other parent, the child internalizes that there is something wrong with them. This is also emotionally painful to the child as you are negative talking about something they love. Raising a child IS NOT A CONTEST TO SEE WHO IS THE BETTER PARENT. Your children should not even know about your differences with the other parent.
